TO CREATE the NEW

 City of Mulberry

The ballot measure to create the City of Mulberry will be on the ballot May 21st. The City of Mulberry was proposed in response to out of control growth. Our neighbors know what’s best for our community, and we should get the chance to do just that!

CITY OF MULBERRY
  • No City Property Tax
  • Voters Must Approve on May 21st
  • Local Control of Planning and Growth
Why do we need to create a city?

In two words: Local Control. Jam-packed traffic, crowded schools, and sprawling apartments are only a few of the concerns that will be addressed by a new city. Out of control growth is harming our neighborhoods - growth that could be responsibly handled if overseen by locally elected city council members.

Who will be included in the city?

The new City of Mulberry will include large areas of unincorporated northeastern Gwinnett County - approximately 35,000 residents. This would include the areas most in need of checks and balances on recent growth.

WILL THIS MAKE MY TAXES GO UP?

NO - the new City of Mulberry will have no property taxes, ensuring the city will reduce the burdens on our community, not add to them. The purpose of the entire effort is to increase local control; not increase our tax burden!

WHO WILL RUN THE NEW CITY?

Rather than having decisions made by five county commissioners, each of whom represents hundreds of thousands of constituents and none of whom live in our community, the City of Mulberry would be governed by five city council members, each of whom would represent less than 7,000 constituents and elect a mayor from among the five. This will allow each resident to have a much greater voice for how our community grows.

Will my police or fire services change?

No, the new City of Mulberry will contract with Gwinnett County to continue providing many of the same county services you’ve grown used to - including services like parks and rec, police, and fire. The primary difference will be that planning and zoning decisions will be made by local City of Mulberry officials - ensuring local control over the future of our community.

How will it be created?

The State Legislature approved and the Governor has signed legislation creating the Charter for the City of Mulberry. Residents will now have to vote to approve the Charter in the Election May 21st.
